A Maine university finance administrator has been hired as the next vice chancellor of finance at the University of North Texas system, which has been rocked by financial problems in the past few months.
Janet Waldron, senior vice president of administration and finance at the University of Maine, will start work effective April 28. The seat has been occupied by an interim administrator for more than a year, after Terry Pankratz became vice president of finance at the University of Texas at Dallas in December 2012.
UNT system Chancellor Lee Jackson said Waldron will help the system and its three campuses update its practices as they continue to grow.
“We are pretty well unified in the campuses and the system, but we have relied too much on outdated practices that are not considered state-of-the-art in the 21st century,” Jackson said. “Janet has a reputation for having high expectations for best practices services, for customer service, for using automation to its full potential — all of those are areas we know we need to make improvements in as we grow.”
Waldron is coming at a point of financial turmoil for the university, which has called in outside auditors and is under investigation by the State Auditor’s Office for financial irregularities in statements and accounting. Before joining the University of Maine in 2003, she served as Maine’s commissioner of the department of administration and finance for eight years.
“She has deep experience in both university finance and state budgeting, which for every public university in America is sort of a critical juncture,” Jackson said. “A lot of candidates had one or the other, but she has a very good balance.”
For Waldron, the position is an opportunity to use her skills from her time at the University of Maine as well as Maine state offices.
“The position seemed like a wonderful opportunity to use a lot of the skills and knowledge I’ve acquired throughout my career,” she said. “That’s part of what attracted me.”
Waldron will oversee financial planning and analysis and a number of offices, including budget, business services, controller, treasurer and information technology.
“She spent her entire life in New England, so this opportunity for a different challenge in a different region that is growing a lot has a lot of potential,” Jackson said.
“She is a very good match for what we need.”
