The Guyer High School prom is expected to go on next Saturday at Buffalo Valley Event Center, a popular venue damaged in a one-alarm fire earlier this week, according to an official from the school.
Gene Terronez, associate principal at Guyer High, said school officials are waiting to get an all-clear sign from fire officials but are expecting the prom will continue as scheduled at the center.
He said he’s been in contact with the facilities manager at the event center since the day after the fire, and officials at the facility intend to put up a large tent to accommodate overflow.
If the venue is not approved by the fire marshal for hosting the prom, Terronez said the event will be moved to Guyer High, where dinner will be served in the cafeteria and the band will perform and dancing will take place in Wildcat Gymnasium.
“I hope it doesn’t come to that,” he said. “I hope the fire marshal will release the property for us.”
He said he will check the site out for himself before finalizing the plans.
“Before anything is decided, I will go out there and walk the property to make sure everything will work,” he said.
Firefighters responded early Wednesday to a one-alarm blaze at the Buffalo Valley Event Center in the 2900 block of West Ganzer Road in Denton after a passerby reported seeing flames.
The garage and main office were overwhelmed with fire. The facility’s ballroom — which hosts receptions and large-scale affairs — had heavy smoke damage, a fire official said.
County officials said the cause of the fire remains under investigation and it will probably be a couple of weeks before a final cause is determined.
A spokeswoman for the Buffalo Valley Event Center said Friday afternoon insurance adjustors were helping take care of restoration. The kitchen that was damaged should be up and running by today and the main ballroom should be reopened no later than 60 days, maybe sooner.
As of early Friday, Terronez said 300 tickets had been sold for the Guyer High prom.
