Crews work to repair a gas leak at the intersection of Lillian Miller Parkway and Teasley Lane on Friday in Denton.

A construction crew doing utility work struck a gas line midday Friday in Denton, forcing the temporary closure of the intersection of Lillian Miller Parkway and Teasley Lane and diverting school buses on their way to pick up students after school.

Denton police officers stopped traffic at the intersection while Atmos Energy crew members worked to determine which line had been hit so they could stop the leak.

The break occurred shortly after noon and was sealed up by about 3:30 p.m. Friday, when police began allowing vehicles back through the intersection.

Brad Lahart, Denton Fire Department battalion chief, said a hazardous-materials response truck was on the scene at about 1:30 p.m. monitoring the air quality.

The crew members first pinched off a 2-inch diameter gas line but found that it did not stop the leak. They then moved on to a 4-inch diameter line, Lahart said.

Crews were able to fix the leak before nearby Houston Elementary School let out, but school buses had to take a different route to the campus, officials said.

Denton school district spokesman Mario Zavala said the buses being sent to Houston Elementary for the school’s 2:50 p.m. dismissal were diverted.

“We have a plan in place to divert the kids,” Lahart said Friday afternoon. “They will still be walking home, but they won’t go through that intersection. We will divert them around a bit.”
