Two major events this weekend, one traditional and one that’s becoming a tradition, help mark Memorial Day.
A traditional “Decoration Day” observation and Memorial Day service will be held today at Roselawn Memorial Park, featuring Purple Heart recipient Virgil Aldag, a veteran of the Vietnam War, as the guest speaker.
The annual ceremony conducted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Ladies Auxiliary Post 2205 begins at 1 p.m. The public is invited to attend. For more information, call 940-382-5532.
And a little farther from home, Denton restaurant owner Aaron White, who served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1997 to 2002, invites individuals and families to participate in the finale of Carry the Load, the annual relay walk that began May 1 at West Point, N.Y., and finishes this weekend in Dallas.
The emerging tradition will see thousands walking from 4 p.m. Sunday until noon Monday along the Katy Trail in Dallas.
White says people don’t have to walk the entire 20 hours and 14 minutes, or even carry anything, in order to be part of this remembrance for the fallen and those who are still serving.
“The point is to go further than you think you can and carry more than you think you can,” said White, who is on the board for the Dallas chapter of the national nonprofit fundraising group.
Based on last year’s walk, he expects about 500 to 1,000 of the 3,000 expected participants will walk all night.
“Some people start the walk, go home and go to bed, and then come back in the morning,” White said.
The family-friendly event is based at Reverchon Park in Dallas. More information can be found online at http://carrytheload.org.
Mark Roy, commander of American Legion Post 71, will be among those at Carry the Load this weekend.
Locally, the post was set to hold a flag retirement ceremony after a special breakfast Saturday morning, Roy said.
Residents may leave old flags in a repurposed mail drop outside the group’s building at 2500 Spencer Road for future retirement ceremonies.
