Rain to continue but likely won’t bust drought

A car splashes through a puddle Tuesday on University Drive in Denton. Denton County dodged the most severe storms Tuesday, although rain chances will continue through the week.

Rain has been coming to Texas in buckets, but not everyone has been under one.

In West Texas, for example, areas around Sweetwater have seen more than 10 inches fall in the past week, according to Dennis Cain, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Fort Worth. Denton, on the other hand, has seen just 0.37 of an inch fall in the past four days.

Tuesday’s rainfall, which came with a severe weather watch, was likely the best chance this week for widespread, soaking rains, Cain said. Denton County dodged the most severe storms Tuesday, although rain chances will continue through the week.

A slow-moving upper-level low came into the area over the weekend that will linger through much of the week, making it possible with each day’s heating for storms to develop. But chatter about this week’s weather pattern being a drought-buster, at least for Denton County, is premature.

“We need another month of these kinds of systems to really bust it,” Cain said.

The weather service predicts a 20 percent chance of storms for most of the week, with a slightly higher chance of 30 percent to 40 percent on Friday.

Cooler temperatures will give way to more normal temperatures, with highs in the mid- to upper-80s by the end of the week.

Cain said next week looks more typical for the beginning of a Texas summer.

Highs in the 90s and “then a lot of dry,” Cain said.
