Two area lottery players win $1 million

Denton County residents have struck gold once again as two residents each claimed $1 million in lottery jackpots recently.

Scott McDaniel of Ponder won $1 million from the Texas Lottery Powerball drawing on May 31.

McDaniel told lottery officials he heard about a $1 million Powerball winner while cashing in some scratch-off tickets at Bev’s convenience store on FM156 in Ponder, but he had no idea it was one of his tickets. He checked all his purchased tickets, and sure enough, found the winning ticket at home.

The Quick Pick ticket from Bev’s matched all five numbers — 15, 27, 31, 34 and 48 — but not the Powerball — 1 — for the drawing. Lottery officials said more than 32,000 tickets sold in Texas were winners of cash prizes ranging from $4 to $1 million that evening.

Hickory Creek resident Richard J. McQuone recently purchased a 20X Ca$h ticket and scratched his way to a $1 million prize, according to a news release from the Texas Lottery Commission.

For selling the winning tickets, both the Beer Barn in Lake Dallas and Bev’s are eligible for a retailer bonus of $10,000. Management was not available for comment Thursday at either business.

The top prize for the $20 scratch-off ticket McQuone purchased is $1 million, officials said.

The two wins come right on the heels of a Denton man claiming the first of the three $7.5 million grand prizes in the Millionaires Club game — a $50 scratch-off — last month.

Texas Lottery officials said Jesse Patino’s $7.5 million winning ticket was sold at the RaceTrac convenience store on Fort Worth Drive in Denton.
