Both lanes of U.S. Highway 380 are shut down as emergency crews work a fatal accident scene near Ponder and redirect traffic onto a newly paved section next to the main roadway Tuesday.

A man died after being involved in a head-on collision near a construction zone near Ponder late Tuesday afternoon.

Ponder Fire Chief Charles Williams said that according to witness interviews, a man driving a pickup was traveling westbound on U.S. Highway 380 when he crossed over onto the other side of the roadway, ramming into another pickup head-on.

Williams said the driver of the truck that allegedly crossed the roadway was extracted from his vehicle, but was already dead. The man had not been identified as of late Tuesday, officials said.

The female driver of the other pickup involved also was extracted, he said, and she and a male passenger were taken to Denton Regional Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

The accident, which occurred at approximately 4 p.m. between Smith and Ripy roads, shut down U.S. 380 in both directions, officials said.

“We were able to divert traffic after a while so it wasn’t shut down completely for the two hours [of working the investigation],” Williams said.

The Krum and Denton fire departments, the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Denton County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the crash, according to officials at the scene.

Additional details were not immediately available, and the accident remains under investigation.
