A man killed in a wreck near Ponder on Tuesday afternoon has been identified.

Sgt. Lonny Haschel, spokesman for the Texas Highway Patrol, said Matthew Moreno, 38, of Decatur was dead at the scene of the crash along U.S. Highway 380 near Smith Road.

Haschel said Moreno was driving a GMC Sierra pickup westbound in a construction zone when he failed to negotiate a curve and crossed into the eastbound lanes of oncoming traffic.

Haschel said that Moreno apparently attempted to get back into the westbound lanes, but wasn’t quick enough.

Officials reported a Dodge pickup traveling east rammed head-on with Moreno.

The driver of the Dodge, Barbara O’Briant, a 77-year-old resident of Durant, Okla., and a passenger, 47-year-old John Pollock of Santo, were both transported with non-life-threatening injuries to Denton Regional Medical Center.

The investigation into the accident remains open, officials said.
