Denton police stopped a vehicle in the 2400 block of Wildwood Lane on Monday night after officers observed the car swerving on the road with a missing headlight.

According to police reports, an officer spotted the vehicle at 9:22 p.m. When the officer turned around to follow the vehicle, the vehicle swerved onto the right shoulder and then back onto the road.

While the officer was initiating a traffic stop, a front-seat passenger threw a full bottle of liquid out the window, according to reports.

Police reported detecting a strong odor of alcohol while approaching the car. Another officer searched the area and found a bottle of whiskey that had been thrown, police said.

Officers arrested the driver, a 45-year-old man, on a charge of driving while intoxicated with an open container. The passenger, a 46-year-old woman, was charged with public intoxication, littering and having an open container of alcohol as a passenger.

During the investigation, the arresting officer located a purse in the floorboard and gave it to the transport officer, officials said.

During a property search at the city jail, police found a small digital scale, a small plastic bag, two packaged needles and an empty package of rolling papers inside the purse.

Police said they observed marijuana residue on the plastic bag and scale. The woman was then also charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.
