The Denton Police Department’s longest serving police chief died Saturday morning.

Officer Shane Kizer said E. Wayne Autrey, 87, was Denton police chief from 1964-1977.

“It is with heavy hearts that the Denton Police Department announces the passing of former Chief of Police E. Wayne Autrey,” Kizer said in a prepared statement Saturday.

Autrey began his career in law enforcement as a highway patrolman for the Texas Department of Public Safety. Prior to working for Denton, he served as chief of police for the city of Weatherford, officials said.

After retiring from Denton police, Autrey served as police chief for Texas Woman’s University from 1977 to 1989.

Texas Woman’s University Police Chief Elizabeth Pauley said Saturday she was sad to hear of his passing and plans to attend his memorial.

Funeral arrangements were not available as of press time.
