Denton Mayor Chris Watts has been appointed by the U.S. Conference of Mayors to serve as vice chairman for the Public Power of the Energy Standing Committee, according to a city of Denton press release.
Kevin Johnson, mayor of Sacramento, California, and USCM president, made the appointment of Watts for the newly created position, which will help to develop a proactive and strategic agenda regarding public-power issues impacting municipalities across the nation, the press release stated.
Watts serves as president of the Texas Municipal Power Agency board of directors.
Denton Municipal Electric, the city-owned electric utility, boasts a 40 percent renewable energy portfolio at no additional cost to customers, according to the press release.
Denton Municipal Electric has been recognized by the American Public Power Association and was a recipient of the 2011 U.S. Department of Energy Public Power Wind Award.
