My neighbor used their recycle bin to put out their excess holiday trash alongside their trash bin. Is that allowed?
No. The recyclable items are picked up by a different truck and transported to a different facility. Although recycling crews can handle some trash in the mix, if too much trash gets in, it can contaminate the entire load. Then, both the recyclables and the trash from your neighborhood have to go to the landfill.
If you have a lot of trash that has to be put out at once, call the city’s solid waste department at 940-349-8700 to schedule an extra pick-up. For a limited number of times per year, customers can put out certain items of bulky trash for a free pick-up. Otherwise, a city crew will come pick up the extra trash for a $25 fee.
If you have a lot of extra trash, you can take it to the landfill yourself and leave it for a fee, depending on how much it weighs.
