Spring storm whips through

Evening thunderstorms caused damage to some roofs, dumped hail and spurred heavy rain in Denton County on Sunday.

Denton storm spotters reported cloud rotation but no touchdowns, and the city sounded emergency sirens as a precautionary measure, according to fire department reports.

At Harriet Creek Ranch in Justin off State Highway 114, high winds caused roof damage throughout the neighborhood.

Strong winds, lightning and heavy rain lashed the Denton area. Residents reported via Facebook that pea-size hail fell in central Denton, in Providence Village and on Sam Bass Road.

A roof leak saturated the drop ceiling of The Village Church's Denton campus on Oak Street, and ceiling tiles fell and soaked the carpet, according to a maintenance worker.

High winds accompanied the fast-moving storm system, which launched several storms beginning around 4 p.m. along an area from south of Abilene to north of Breckenridge and Bowie. The storms moved northeast into Denton County around 7:30 p.m.

The North Central Texas area, including Denton County, remained under a tornado watch through midnight, according to the National Weather Service.

The forecast for today and Tuesday calls for more chances of showers and thunderstorms across the region.

Thunderstorms that rolled through the region Saturday brought heavy rain, lightning and high winds, which downed large tree branches and damaged some property in the area. A Denton County resident at Jackson and Ripy roads reported roof damage to a neighbor's home and barn, which had its doors ripped off by the gusty winds.
