Allen Clark, a veteran who lost both legs in Vietnam and later became committed to public service and helping veterans, will be the featured speaker for the Tuesday meeting of the Denton County Republican Assembly.

The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Lewisville Chamber of Commerce, 551 N. Valley Parkway.

Members of the public are invited to attend.

Clark operates a lay ministry involved in outreach efforts to help veterans recover emotionally and spiritually from their wartime experiences.

His autobiography, Wounded Soldier, Healing Warrior, was published in 2007.

Several Denton County residents, including Shirley Spellerberg, president of the Denton County Republican Assembly, were delegates to an endorsing convention held by the Texas Republican Assembly Jan. 27-28 in Fort Worth.

Other Denton County residents serving as delegates were Rudy Cajka, vice president of the Texas Republican Assembly, Lillian and Richard Creasy, Kurt Hyde, Lynn Yeargain, Steve Hill, Landra Turner, Jake VanOoyen and Stacey Mayfield.

Spellerberg led the resolutions committee.

Hill served on the rules committee and Hyde served on the credentials committee.

U.S. Senate candidates Tom Leppert, Ted Cruz, Lela Pittinger and Glenn Addison addressed the convention, but after three ballots, none received the required two-thirds vote for endorsement, according to a press release.

The convention endorsed: Becky Berger for railroad commissioner; incumbent Judge Don Willett for Texas Supreme Court; and incumbent Judge Elsa Alcala for the Court of Criminal Appeals, according to a press release.

The convention also endorsed several candidates in the GOP State Board of Education primary races: David Bradley, Place 7; Barbara Cargill, Place 8; Randy Stevenson, Place 9; and Jeff Fleece, Place 10.

In addition, assembly delegates approved a resolution calling for the repeal of Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act, which reads:

"Be it Resolved by the Texas Republican Assembly that we call for the repeal of Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act, which requires Texas and certain other states to receive pre-clearance by the U.S. Department of Justice before redistricting maps can be implemented."

The Denton County Republican Assembly meets on the first Tuesday of every month at 6:30 p.m. at the Lewisville Chamber of Commerce.
