Sheriff’s investigators enter a home in unincorporated Denton County near Ponder on Wednesday to investigate the fatal shooting of Wendell McDonald, 28, of Oklahoma.

PONDER - A woman shot and killed her former husband Wednesday morning after he apparently lay in wait for her and forced her into the home where she was living with her parents and children just off Seaborn Road in unincorporated Denton County.

Denton County Medical Examiner investigators have identified the man as Wendell McDonald, 28, of Oklahoma. Chief Investigator Troy Taylor said the exact city of residence has not yet been determined.

The woman called for help about 10 a.m. Arriving paramedics found the man on the floor of the master bedroom, where the woman was attempting to perform CPR, but they could not resuscitate him.

The woman told sheriff's investigators that she dropped off her children at an activity and returned to the house. He was hiding in the yard and accosted her as she exited her vehicle, investigators said.

"She admits to shooting him and says it was self-defense," said sheriff's Lt. Rick Clark. "She told us that he forced her inside the house and sexually assaulted her. He got the gun out of her father's closet. She shot him once in the chest."

McDonald was declared dead at the scene. Clark said the investigation is ongoing and it was not clear how the woman gained possession of the revolver, he said.

Sheriff's investigators found the pickup McDonald was driving hidden behind an abandoned mobile home about a mile east of the woman's house.

The woman, who is not being identified because she is a sexual assault victim, was taken to a Denton hospital.

She told investigators that she had a protective order against McDonald, and he was not supposed to be near the house.

The case will be investigated as a homicide and will be routinely turned over to the district attorney for possible grand jury action, Clark said.

Denton County records show that McDonald was indicted on charges of aggravated kidnapping and aggravated sexual assault in 2009. The indictments allege that on Sept. 15, 2009, he abducted her at knifepoint, took her against her will to another location and sexually assaulted her.

On Feb. 12, 2010, court records show that he entered a plea bargain with the Denton County District Attorney's Office and pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor offense of assault. He was sentenced to 90 days in jail.
