Congressman Michael Burgess will win the Republican primary race for U.S. House District 26, the Denton Record-Chronicle projects.
With over half to the precincts reporting results, it is clear the 15-year representative of U.S. House District 26 will move onto face a Democratic challenger in November. By 10 p.m., Burgess had over 18,000 votes more than his opponent, Frisco businesswoman Veronica Birkenstock.
Burgess supporters began their celebration around 7 p.m., when the early voting results were posted online. It was clear to many that he would win, because early votes alone gave Burgess a 13,000-vote cushion over Birkenstock. That lead only accelerated as the overall votes were counted.
On the Democratic side, the race is still undecided. Will Fisher is ahead of Linsey Fagan by about 1,000 votes.
