Denton resident Scott Campell was diagnosed with metastatic melanoma in his 20s, and his prognosis was grim. With chemotherapy, radiation and a specialized immuno-therapy, Campbell beat the deadly disease 26 years ago. Now he urges people to be mindful of the searing Texas sun. Sun exposure is a major risk factor for all types of skin cancer - basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma. Melanoma is one of the fastest-spreading cancers. About 87,110 new melanomas will be diagnosed (about 52,170 in men and 34,940 in women) this year.
About 9,730 people are expected to die of melanoma (about 6,380 men and 3,350 women) in 2017. Melanoma rates have been rising for the last 30 years. , Wednesday, June 14, 2017, in Denton, Texas, Jeff Woo/DRC
