Denton Community Theatre indulges in a little mystery -- and a lot of music -- for this year's fundraising show.

The company's "Encore" series offers a summer show -- sometimes a simply staged musical review and sometimes a full production -- to entertain its patrons with lighter fare. This year, the company stages Curtains, by Broadway powerhouses Fred Ebb and John Kander on lyrics and music, respectively, and Peter Stone, who wrote the show's book.

Longtime community theater volunteers Betty Kay Seibt and Bonnie McCormick direct.

Curtains is a musical murder mystery set in Boston in 1959. A beleaguered company is staging a version of Robin Hood set in the Old West. On opening night, the musical has already gotten a bad review, and then the universally despised leading lady drops dead when the cast heads out to take their bows.

An investigator sequesters the cast, crew and orchestra for questioning, and as he reviews the evidence, he starts to fall for one of the actresses.

"It's a great summer show," Seibt said. "It's fun, it's entertaining. You don't feel like there's going to be a quiz afterward."

McCormick said Kander and Ebb pay tribute to American musicals in the score.

"It pays homage to every major musical," she said. "There are references to Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, to Oklahoma! and South Pacific. Even White Christmas. There are these huge dance numbers. If you love musicals, you'll love this show."

Amanda Guerrero returns to choreograph the show, and Mike Strecher designed the set. Sydney Barber directs the music and the 15-piece orchestra.

Opening night includes a gala starting at 6 p.m. Friday at 207 W. Hickory St. Performances are at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, June 30 and July 1, and July 7-8. Matinee performances are at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 2 and July 9.

All performances are at the Campus Theatre, 214 W. Hickory St.

Gala tickets for Friday cost $50 and include show tickets. Show-only tickets cost $20.
