The Denton City Council voted 6-1 to adopt a resolution supporting the city of El Cenizo in its lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of Senate Bill 4.
The so-called "sanctuary city" bill subjects Texas sheriffs and police chiefs who don't cooperate with federal immigration enforcement officials to penalties. Elected law enforcement officers could be removed from office. City police chiefs could face misdemeanor charges.
Assistant City Attorney Victor Flores said the city's resolution would likely be combined with resolutions from other cities in future court proceedings in the El Cenizo case.
Council member Don Duff cast the opposing vote , saying he was representing the view of his constituents in District 3 by supporting SB 4.
