Double Oak Mayor pro tem Steve Durbin, 66, died Sunday

Steve Durbin, Double Oak's mayor pro tem, died suddenly Sunday at a local hospital. He was 66.

According to a city press release, Durbin and his family moved to Double Oak in 2003. A town of about 2,900, Double Oak is south of Denton, between Bartonville and Flower Mound.

A longtime member of the Double Oak Town Council, Durbin was set to finish his current term in May. He faced two opponents in a re-election bid.

During his public service, Durbin served as the town's treasurer. City leaders credited him with helping town leaders balance the budget, follow a sound investment strategy and keep the local property tax rate among the lowest in the county.

Durbin also created the Mayor Tom Pidcock Memorial. Pidcock, too, died in office in 2011.

Durbin was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and attended Western Michigan University. He was president of PressCut Industries before he retired. He is survived by his wife, Peggy Durbin, and his son, Nick Durbin.

They are members of St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church in Lewisville. Funeral arrangements are pending.
