Chegwidden and Boydston to face off again in July

Denton County District Attorney Investigator Dale Chegwidden will face Denton police Officer Doug Boydston in a July runoff for constable in Precinct 5.

Chegwidden brought in 44 percent of the votes, only slightly more than Boydston’s 42.4 percent.

Precinct 5 Deputy Constable George Riojas received 13.6 percent of votes.

The candidates seek to replace Constable Ken Jannereth, who was denied his peace officer’s license in April following a February 2010 criminal mischief conviction.

“I am excited. … I am happy to be in the position to be in a runoff,” Chegwidden said. He offered his thanks to his supporters.

Boydston said he and his team will roll up their sleeves and keep working.

Riojas, who spent the day working, called it a clean race.

“It was not my time,” Riojas said. “I take my hats off to them. I just got to keep doing my job and we will go from there,” he said.

Precinct 5 covers the largest area among the county’s six precincts. It covers the northern part of the county from the Wise County line to the Collin County line. It includes parts of Denton.

Boydston, 49, has been a Denton officer for more than 26 years and is assigned as bailiff and warrants officer for the municipal court. He lives in Sanger.

Chegwidden, 50, has been in law enforcement since 1986. He served as a Denton County sheriff’s deputy as a jailer, a patrol officer, a K-9 officer and a field training officer before moving to the district attorney’s office in 1999. He lives in Bolivar.

Riojas, 55, has more than 24 years of law enforcement experience, including 15 years of civil process. He has been in law enforcement since 1982. He started with the LaSalle County Sheriff’s Office and later worked for the Frio County Sheriff’s Office. He’s been a deputy constable in Precinct 5 since 1989. He served as chief deputy for several years. He lives in Sanger.
