Elections officials expect polls to be busy on Saturday

Elections officials expect a busy day Saturday for the runoff election, according to Frank Phillips, county elections administrator.

“Especially in Denton — if history holds true,” Phillips said.

A total of 3,108 ballots were cast in person or sent by mail for the Denton runoffs, with nearly 750 of those ballots cast in the last two days of early voting. Phillips said the early voting turnout may indicate that a total of more than 6,200 people, or about 11 percent of registered voters, will cast ballots by Saturday night.

For the May 12 election, 3,944 of Denton’s 57,345 registered voters, or 6.88 percent, cast ballots.

Denton Mayor Mark Burroughs and Place 5 City Council member Pete Kamp received the most votes in the May 12 election, but neither captured more than 50 percent of the vote in the three-way races. Burroughs faces Neil Durrance in the mayoral runoff and Kamp faces David Zoltner for the council post.

Early turnout in Argyle, which also has a runoff race, was nearly flat. Voters there cast 387 ballots by mail or in person, compared with 394 early ballots for the May 12 election.

For the Place 3 race in Argyle, Joan Delashaw and Jackie Thomas tied with 320 votes, throwing the race back to voters for another go.

Little Elm also has a runoff election Saturday.

Unlike early voting, people must travel to their assigned precinct in order to cast a ballot Saturday. Because some precincts have changed as a result of redistricting, elections officials recommend that voters confirm their voting location by going to the elections website,, or calling their office at 940-349-3200.

Polling locations will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday.
