Two men were seriously injured Tuesday night when the boat they were riding in crashed into the Ray Roberts Lake dam.

Sheriff’s spokesman Tom Reedy said Wednesday that the driver of the boat, Aaron Ortez of Pilot Point, remains in Denton County Jail charged with intoxicated assault with serious bodily injury, a third-degree felony, in connection with the accident.

Passersby reported about 10 p.m. that a man was standing in the middle of FM455 on the lake dam waving a shirt. They saw no accident or vehicle, but other witnesses reported a boating accident. The boat apparently crashed into the dam. Pilot Point and Sanger paramedics responded along with game wardens, and sheriff’s deputies arranged a landing for CareFlite helicopters on the bridge. They were taken to a Plano trauma center.

According to reports, an 18-year-old man suffered a puncture wound in the stomach and a man in his 20s suffered numerous head injuries and was unresponsive but breathing at the time. Their names have not been released. Game wardens could not be reached for comment Wednesday.

Reedy said Ortez appeared to be highly intoxicated and could not name the other occupants of the boat.
