A Denton police officer waiting on the side of the interstate late Thursday spotted and stopped a vehicle driven by a man suspected of murder.

Angel Agosto, 50, is accused of shooting Rosa Vegas, 43, four times in the back at a house in the 600 block of Chambers Street about 8 p.m. Arriving officers learned that Agosto might be heading toward Fort Worth, so they searched Interstate 35W for the car he was driving. One officer saw the blue Toyota Camry pass the spot where he was watching just after 10 p.m.

Police Lt. Scott Langford said Friday that another man was in the car, as well as Agosto’s 11-year-old son and the passenger’s 18-month-old daughter.

Both children were turned over to their mothers.

Langford said the two children were present when Vegas was shot, and Agosto loaded them all in the car when he fled. Texas Rangers and Denton County sheriff’s deputies assisted with the arrest.

“The passenger cooperated with us, and we found the gun used in the shooting in some weeds along the side of the highway where Agosto had thrown it out of the car,” Langford said.

Police Detective Keith Smith said Agosto had been living at the house on and off with his son’s mother, but she made him leave two days earlier. Meanwhile, Vegas had just ended a relationship and had temporarily moved into the house.

Agosto and his passenger had been to the house several times that day.

“The passenger was helping him move out,” Smith said. “He had his baby with him. They all came to the house, and they all left together after the shooting.”

The detective said witnesses told him that Agosto was jealous of Vegas.

“He had an issue with her. He was focused on her,” Smith said. “He believed there was a relationship between [Vegas] and his son’s mother. We’re still investigating, but there apparently was no argument. She was shot multiple times in the back.”

Agosto remained in Denton city jail Friday in lieu of $250,000 bail.
