Fewer than 2 percent of Argyle school district registered voters turned out the first week of early voting in an election to increase the district’s maintenance and operations tax rate by 6 cents.

As of late Tuesday, 97 people had cast their votes, Superintendent Telena Wright said. The district has 5,531 registered voters, she said.

Voting turnout is about what was anticipated the first week, Wright said. It’s uncertain how many people will vote throughout the course of the election, she said. Fewer than 800 voted in the school board election in May, Wright said.

“The largest turnout tends to be on election day,” she said. “That is what I would anticipate in this election.”

Argyle school officials are looking to increase the maintenance and operations tax rate from $1.04005 to $1.10005 per $100 valuation to offset increased expenses for the 2012-13 fiscal year. To increase the rate above the $1.04 rate, the state requires the Argyle district to call a tax ratification election and get voter approval.

The average home value in the Argyle school district is $357,264. District officials have said if the tax ratification vote passes, the tax bill on that average-valued home will increase by $71.

Early voting continues from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Friday and from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday and Tuesday. Election day is from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sept. 15. Voting isdone at the school district’s Administration Building, 800 Eagle Drive.
