The city of Krum, the Krum school district and Denton County’s summer plans for FM1173 paid off and motorists can now enjoy a widened road to make driving safe for students and residents alike.

The entities partnered over the summer to fund, design and manage the construction project to widen FM1173 and provide a turn lane beginning on the west side of Krum Middle School and continuing east past Blanche Dodd Intermediate School.

“That was part of our 2008 bond election for the city of Krum. It was originally planned to expand an intersection on the east side of town,” said County Commissioner Andy Eads. “But when we visited together, the city, the school and the county realized that a better project would be to create a continuous turn lane near the schools.”

Eads said he met Superintendent Mike Davis one morning last year during rush hour. Eads and Davis evaluated the traffic flows and patterns and realized the expansion was a better use of the money.

“Until now, this area has been inconvenient and dangerous during peak traffic hours, but the addition of the turning lane has made remarkable improvements to the flow of traffic,” said Mayor Terri Wilson in a recent news release.

The project includes 3-foot-wide paved shoulders, two 11-foot-wide travel lanes and one 12-foot-wide continuous left-hand turn lane.

The continuous left-hand turn lane is a much-needed improvement that will allow travelers safer access to the businesses and schools along FM1173.

Drainage structures have also been improved, guardrails installed and the ditches have been sodded with grass.

“We started this summer with the goal of completing it before school started, which it was,” Eads said.

Officials held a ribbon-cutting for the road Tuesday. The project cost $484,191. The school district paid the city $200,000 and then the city contracted with the county, which paid the remaining $284,191 to do the work on the state road.

“It was a lot of coordination between multiple parties, but it’s what we do,” Eads said.
