Blotter: Report: Intoxicated man lunges toward officer

An intoxicated man tried to get physical with Denton police officers after he was arrested Thursday.

Officers were called to the 500 block of East Hickory Street for an intoxicated person. An officer soon located the man near the railroad tracks. The man became agitated with the officers and asked them what he did wrong. The report said the officers noted slurred speech and that the man’s eyes were glassy.

He claimed to have nothing to drink and no narcotics in his system, according to the report.

He said he was only in the street because of cones blocking the sidewalk. While the officers saw the cones, they also noticed other areas the man could walk. One of the officers reported seeing the man stumble into the street and stare up at a red traffic light until it turned green. This caused motorists to have to stop at the intersection to avoid hitting him. The man was arrested and taken to city jail. After arriving, the man asked the officer what he was being arrested for.

The report says the officer, who had already answered numerous questions posed by the man, did not answer. The man became agitated again and said the officer was only being quiet because he was being recorded by jail cameras.

The man lunged toward the officer as if trying to head butt him, according to the report. Other officers who witnessed the scene in person and on the jail security screens said the same.
