After conquering her primary election opponent, Michelle French has one opponent standing between her and being Denton County’s new tax assessor/collector.

French, the Republican nominee, faces Libertarian candidate John Gomez in her bid to take over for longtime tax assessor/collector Steve Mossman, who is not seeking re-election.

“My main concern is being able to provide the public service I believe we need,” French said. “I think overall our office has provided a great amount of public service, but I want to change the way we provide it.”

French said she wanted to begin community outreach programs to help residents understand property taxes, “sort of a property tax 101 course.”

Education is one of the biggest things that can be done to help the public and help tax payers understand what their role is and how tax officials can best serve them.

Gomez could not be reached for comment regarding his campaign.

Even without knowing much about her opponent, French is not taking her opponent lightly.

“You take nothing for granted; I’m just thrilled to be able to be the Republican nominee,” she said. “I take my hat off to anybody who puts their name in the race. I am forging ahead and continuing to run this race all the way to the end, I hope the voters will see the experience behind me is something they believe will service them.”
