Teen killed in accident, driver arrested

A 17-year-old passenger died in a one-vehicle accident west of Sanger early Saturday, and the driver was arrested in connection with the death.

Bradley Joe Mitchell of Athens died at the scene of the accident on View Road, about a mile and a half west of Sanger, shortly after 4 a.m.

Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman Lonny Haschel said reports indicate the driver, 18-year-old Sanger resident Tyler Curtis Monroe, was driving a 2005 GMC pickup when he traveled off the south side of the road and struck a utility pole before swerving off and hitting a tree, resulting in Mitchell’s death.

Monroe had minor injuries and was treated at Denton Regional Medical Center before he was transferred to the Denton County Jail and charged with intoxication manslaughter, Haschel said.

Monroe was awaiting arraignment before a judge today, when his bail will be set.
