CoServ Electric hopes to enlighten customers on grid upgrade component

Customers of CoServ Electric have a chance to learn about “smart” meters and other electricity conservation measures at an expo in Lantana on Thursday evening.

CoServ Electric is about halfway through a grid upgrade that includes installing the advanced meters for all of its more than 130,000 customers, according to CoServ spokeswoman Kat Gloria.

The expo includes information on how the advanced meters work, along with an installation demonstration.

The expo, along with CoServ’s website, has information about the automated electronics and radio frequencies used.

“Some people think we can turn down the electricity or turn off their HVAC [heating and cooling system],” Gloria said.

That isn’t true, she said. Both standard and advanced meters are gateways to the grid.

They are either on or off, Gloria said.

But, the new meters are a building block for residents who want to use home energy management or opt into programs that offer cost savings in exchange for load management.

Residents can learn more about those programs and other, more traditional conservation measures at the expo, Gloria said.

The first round of smart meters, about 20,000 in all, were installed in Prosper and Little Elm, after the utility cooperative accepted a $17.2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy in 2010 to make the change. Since July, the utility has been installing the new equipment in phases. Currently, workers are installing meters in the west side of its service area from Valley View to Northlake. The entire project is expected to be completed by April 2013, Gloria said.
