Denton residents who care about the community’s housing needs, from sheltering the homeless to helping seniors stay in their homes, can share their ideas at two upcoming meetings.

The city is conducting public hearings Thursday night, at the Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center, and Monday night, at the Denia Recreation Center, to get feedback on how the city uses federal housing money to provide for community needs.

Barbara Ross, Denton’s community development director, said that considering budget cuts, the city is planning for a 2013-14 federal allocation of about $1.1 million in both the HOME Investments Partnership program and the Community Development Block Grant.

In prior years, the city has spent a lot to help low-income homeowners make minor repairs to their houses. The funding has often been tapped during the hot Texas summers.

“We’re lucky to have that funding help, especially for a senior whose air conditioning goes out,” Ross said.

The public hearings will include information on the city’s current programs and how the money has been used in the past. The staff will also share information on what kinds of projects and programs fit the guidelines should the community want to make a change.

For example, a community shelter for people who are homeless would qualify, Ross said.

The city is providing Spanish translation for the meetings. But if people can’t make it to the meetings, or are uncomfortable about providing feedback in public, Ross encouraged them to submit suggestions in writing, in English or Spanish.

“We’ll include those comments as part of the minutes of the meeting,” Ross said.

The Community Development Division is on the second floor of City Hall East, 601 E. Hickory St., Suite B, Denton TX 76205; and can be reached by phone at 940-349-7726.

The division can also accept comments by e-mail at community.
