ARGYLE — The Argyle school district this week agreed to sell more than an acre of land to a Delaware company connected with the Canyon Falls development.

It’s expected the land, north of FM1171 and west of Stonecrest Road and U.S. Highway 377, will be donated to the town of Flower Mound, according to district officials.

“The developer needed that land back to be able to dedicate to the fire station,” Superintendent Telena Wright said. “That’s why the district sold that land back. That was the location they wanted for the fire station.”

The school board, with a 5-1 vote, approved a contract to sell the 1.183 acres of land for about $90,000 Monday.

The land is a part of about 108 acres the school district purchased in 2009 for approximately $8 million, or $70,000 per acre, for a future high school site, Wright said. The land was purchased with money from a 2007 bond package approved by voters.

The money to be obtained from the land sale will be placed in the district’s bond fund, said Kevin Faciane, school board president.

School board and district officials have discussed the sale in closed session meetings during the last several months, and Monday’s decision was “the culmination of those negotiations,” he said.

Board member Jim Haltom voted against the sale.

He said he gathered information during a closed session but declined to comment further.

Wright said the sale would not impact any future developments on the remaining land.

The Canyon Falls development is slated to be a more than 1,200-acre, mixed-use community with more than 1,000 homes. Officials with the Canyon Falls development previously said crews are expected to start work on a main road leading into the development site at Cleveland Gibbs Road this year and that the first houses in the development are slated to appear by the fourth quarter of 2013.
