Jupiter House owner seeking to replace Watts

Joey Hawkins, owner of Jupiter House Coffee, has filed preliminary paperwork for a City Council campaign and confirmed that he plans to run for Denton’s District 4.

He filed to appoint Virgil Strange as his campaign treasurer on Jan. 15, the day after friends held a reception to announce his candidacy.

Hawkins is the first person to announce his intention to run in District 4, which covers much of southwestern Denton. The winner of the election will replace outgoing council member Chris Watts, who will not be eligible to run again because of term limits. Watts has served three terms, having first been elected in 2007.

Hawkins said he’s running for many reasons, including his love for Denton and his desire to see good things happen. He and his wife, Amy, became the owners of Jupiter House Coffee on the Square in 2007.

The couple opened and later closed a second location of Jupiter House near the intersection of Carroll Boulevard and University Drive. He is working to reopen the location as a bagel shop, and for the most part things have gone smoothly, but not as smoothly as they could, he said.

Hawkins hopes to bring that perspective — one of a small business owner — to the dais.

“I think I can help with the relationship between the city and small-business owners trying to make it in Denton,” Hawkins said.

Of the meet-and-greet reception, Hawkins said he was nervous at first, but then he saw many friends and others from the Rotary Club come out to say they would support him.

Strange, who is the landlord for Hawkins’ business, said he has known Hawkins for about four years and finds him bright and hard-working.

“He’s got lots of enthusiasm,” Strange said. “His voice [as a small-business owner] should be heard, and I think he hears the voices of many others and can bring that perspective.”
