A grand jury has indicted a former middle school janitor on a charge of aggravated sexual assault of a child last week.

Denton resident Ambrocio Mata, 62, is accused of having sexual contact with a 12-year-old boy at Calhoun Middle School on Oct. 22 while he was working as a janitor there.

An arrest affidavit obtained from the Denton Police Department last November stated that another custodian caught Mata and the student “standing very close to each other.”

Further details in the arrest affidavit allege there is surveillance camera footage showing the two meeting together and touching inappropriately before moving into a janitor’s closet.

Mata joined the district’s custodial staff in 2005, according to district officials. Since his arrest last year, he has been terminated.

Denton school district spokeswoman Sharon Cox said Wednesday that the district is continuing to work with police officials in the investigation.

No other comment can be made because the incident concerns a personnel issue, Cox said.

Mata remains at the Denton County Jail in lieu of $250,000 bail on the sexual assault charge and a $10,000 bail for revoked probation on a third charge of driving while under the influence, Denton County Sheriff’s Office officials said.

His arraignment is set for Feb. 21, according to court records.
