The Denton school board will consider naming the location for the district’s 22nd elementary school at tonight’s meeting.

Board President Mia Price said the board has two potential sites in mind for the district’s next elementary school. She said this will be the last elementary school to be built from the 2007 bond package.

The board is prepared to hear the district’s fourth-quarter enrollment growth report and a report from the district’s bond progress committee. She said both reports will factor into the board’s decision on the location of the next elementary school.

“When you are growing almost 1,000 students per year, that’s an elementary school per year, and that’s where our district is standing as far as growth, so we have a need for an elementary school,” Price said.

District officials have previously said the fastest-growth areas in the district include the U.S. Highway 380 corridor and the Lantana area.

Recently, the district entered into an agreement to acquire 12 acres in the southeast portion of the Lantana development for the construction of a future educational facility, likely an elementary school.

Superintendent Jamie Wilson said the district has not yet closed on the land in the Lantana development because district officials are waiting on the survey.

The district has also acquired an elementary site along the U.S. 380 corridor where Navo Road turns into Villa Paloma Boulevard.

Last month, the school board received a report indicating the district has the capacity under its current debt service tax rate to sell the more than $76.7 million remaining from the 2007 bond package.

Wilson said the district has not yet sold the remaining 2007 bonds. Discussion regarding the bond sale will take place over the next couple of board meetings, he said.

Tonight’s school board meeting begins at 6 p.m. at the district administration building at 1307 N. Locust St.
