Police have upgraded a Denton man’s charge to manslaughter after his girlfriend died Saturday evening, officials said.

Whiskey Dalton Williams, 20, initially was charged with aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury after he got into a fight with another man in front of his residence last week in the 600 block of Boardwalk Lane.

Officer Ryan Grelle, spokesman for the Denton department, said police responded to the incident at 4:40 p.m. March 20.

One of the men displayed a pistol, and a struggle over the weapon ensued.

“During the struggle, the gun went off, striking a 21-year-old woman in the face,” Grelle said.

The woman, Ashley Walters of Corinth, was listed in critical condition after being shot in the face. She died Saturday evening at Denton Regional Medical Center after her family removed her from life support, police said.

The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled Walters’ death a homicide.

Grelle said the other man involved in the fight is not facing any charges.

Williams is being held at the Denton County Jail in lieu of $151,000 bail. A possession of marijuana charge also is listed, according to jail records. The case remains under investigation.
