The Denton chapter of the League of United Latin American Citizens will be granting 28 scholarships during a banquet scheduled at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Denton Country Club, 1213 Country Club Drive in Argyle.

Seventeen students will be named National LULAC Scholars. Another 11 will receive scholarships that LULAC will grant in partnership with North Central Texas College, the University of North Texas and Texas Woman’s University. The LULAC Council No. 4366 will grant approximately $107,000 in scholarships with funds gathered from local donors, educational institutions, businesses and organizations.

Isabella Piña-Hinojosa, this year’s scholarship chairwoman, said the group received a good selection of students from local high schools.

“We are getting a lot more applicants than we did when we first started 20 years ago,” Piña-Hinojosa said. “Among this year’s students, we have some who are interested in physics and the sciences. All of them are sharp and outstanding.”

She has served as the scholarship chairwoman for the Denton chapter for the past four years.

Julie Monge, Collin County teen court coordinator, will be the guest speaker at the banquet.

Last year, the organization awarded nearly $135,000 to 22 students from Denton, Guyer and Ryan high schools.
