Kamp plans to propose DCTA’s Denton center to be named for Brock
Mayor Pro Tem Pete Kamp told fellow City Council members this week that she plans to propose that the DCTA’s Downtown Denton Transit Center be named for former Denton Mayor Euline Brock.
The announcement came at the end of a briefing during the council’s workshop Tuesday, outlining when Denton will convey the property, located at 604 E. Hickory St., to the Denton County Transportation Authority.
“She was very instrumental in this project happening,” Kamp said. “She started talking about transit and public transportation and rail-to-trail in the early 1990s.”
Denton built the transit center with federal grant funds and will turn the property over to the transportation authority sometime this fall.
Before DCTA was formed, Denton operated a public transportation system known as LINK. In 2005, Denton transferred all those public transportation system assets to DCTA. In the meantime, however, the city received a federal grant of $3.1 million to build a transit center for the system. The city and DCTA entered into an interlocal agreement for the city to manage the building’s construction, with DCTA paying the match for the grant.
The building was opened two years ago.
Last month, the city received word that the grant was officially closed out, clearing the way for the property’s conveyance, according to Mark Nelson, the city’s transportation director.
Both the city staff and representatives from the transportation authority told the City Council that, should the city want to see the building named, they should name it before transferring the property.
In an interview Wednesday, Brock said that Kamp spoke with her briefly about the naming possibility. Brock served as the city’s mayor from 2000 to 2006.
“Naturally, it would be thrilling for me if it came to pass,” Brock said.
City Manager George Campbell told the council that the staff would prepare a resolution for a future council meeting.
