Crews began Monday preparing a corner lot at Pirtle and Frame streets for a new 98-space gravel parking lot for Texas Woman’s University, and they plan to have the lot completed before the fall semester begins.
But this will be a temporary fix, said Brenda Floyd, vice president for finance and administration. A new parking garage for the Denton campus is in the master plan, but is not yet underway.
“As we have continued enrollment growth at the Denton campus, we need to provide additional parking for commuting students, and this is our short-term solution to that issue,” she said.
Nouveau Construction and Technology Services in Carrollton was contracted by the university to complete the project, costing $186,138. When plans for the lot were being discussed, Floyd and the Board of Regents estimated the project could cost up to $300,000. The project is using funds from unbudgeted interest earnings.
Joleesia Berry, the TWU student regent, said she’s excited about the lot since finding a parking space at peak hours can be difficult, and she has heard several other students complain about the need for more spaces.
“I think it’s going to be perfect — this is something we absolutely need,” she said.
The new lot, which will include lighting and an emergency phone kiosk, is set to be completed Aug. 26. It will look similar to the existing lot at Bell Avenue and Schmitz Street, Floyd said.
At this point, the lot should allow all TWU parking decals, though Floyd said this may change.
The new lot will be located in the southeast section of the campus, in an area where the school has been acquiring property.
When the Board of Regents approved the new lot in June, school officials looked at other locations to expand parking, but said this area made the most sense.
“When we do have need, and we do at certain times, we’ve investigated several opportunities and we found this to be in the closest proximity to the campus, therefore making it the best choice for students,” Floyd said at that time.
