The North Texas State Fair Association had many qualified applicants for the 2013 North Texas State Fair Association and Bob C. Powers scholarships.
“We are extremely proud to announce the recipients of this year’s Scholarship Programs,” Glenn Carlton, executive director, said in a news release.
Cheyanne Nicole Bullock was awarded the Bob C. Powers Scholarship. Bullock, a graduate of Krum High School, plans to attend Texas Tech University in the fall to pursue a degree in agricultural communications, with a minor in agricultural education. She hopes to become a public relations director for an agricultural company or organization.
Katie J. Ullrich was awarded the North Texas State Fair Association Scholarship. She graduated from Plano East Senior High School and will be attending Texas Tech to study agricultural education, with a minor in physics. Ullrich’s goal is to become a teacher who will make a difference and inspire her students in the field of agriculture.
Library plans ‘Dork Day’ celebration
Fans of Rachel Renee Russell’s Dork Diaries books are invited to celebrate “Dork Day” at North Branch Library, 3020 N. Locust St.
Readers ages 7 to 11 are invited to “dorkify” their lives and celebrate all things dorky. The event at 3 p.m. Thursday will include games, karaoke, crafts, snacks and a chance to win a Dork Diaries T-shirt.

RSVP to present session about West Nile virus to Krum Lions Club
The RSVP (Retired and Senior Volunteer Program) West Nile Task Force will give a presentation on the West Nile virus to members of the Krum Lions Club on Thursday.
The program will be at 7 p.m. in the boardroom at the Krum ISD Administration Building, 1200 Bobcat Blvd.
The presentation will include a brief history of the West Nile virus, how the virus is spread, symptoms and treatment, and how to prevent mosquito bites and limit mosquito breeding sites. West Nile virus information provided by the Denton County Health Department will also be given to participants.

Ann’s Haven plans monthly bereavement lunch at Elks Lodge
Ann’s Haven VNA will host a monthly bereavement luncheon at noon Tuesday, Aug. 13, at the Denton Elks Lodge.
The next monthly luncheon for the friends and supporters of Ann’s Haven VNA will begin at noon at the lodge, 228 E. Oak St.
Guest speaker will be educator and consultant Kirsten Kaae, whose talk is titled “Managing Your Energies While Grieving.”
Lunch will be provided by First Christian Church of Lewisville, and there is no cost to attend.

Classic rock benefit set for Sunday
Headliners of Texas, an event production company, along with the Denton Animal Shelter Foundation, will present an evening of classic rock ’n’ roll on Sunday to benefit the foundation. The shows, from 7 to 8:15 p.m. and 9 to 10:15 p.m., will be at Banter Bistro, 219 W. Oak St.
Tickets are $15 each or two for $25, available online at www.dentonasf.com. All proceeds benefit the shelter foundation.
Sanger library plans fundraiser
A fundraiser for the Sanger Public Library is planned from 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday at Fuzzy’s Taco Shop, 1004 Maple St. in Sanger.
Fliers will be available at several Sanger locations, including the library at 501 Bolivar St., for residents to bring in when they place an order at Fuzzy’s during the fundraiser.
A percentage of the total sales made with the fliers will go toward supporting activities and programs at the Sanger library.
Godzilla gaming weekend planned at Sanger library
The Sanger Public Library will host a Godzilla-themed gaming weekend on Friday and Saturday.
The fun will start with a movie screening at 7 p.m. Friday, and a drawing will be held for a door prize sponsored by Chibi Goji Toys.
The Godzilla action continues Saturday when the library hosts a Godzilla: Unleashed Wii tournament. Children, preteens and families are invited to take part from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and teens can participate from 2 to 5 p.m. Other Godzilla games will be available for free play during the tournament.
