Local stores are beginning to prepare for this weekend’s tax-free holiday by offering extra discounts and incentives to shoppers.

From Friday through Sunday, qualifying merchandise including clothing, footwear, backpacks and school supplies costing less than $100 an item will not be subject to state or local sales taxes. As a result, the state comptroller’s office estimates that shoppers could save $78.9 million statewide.

The items that are exempt from state and local taxes are the same as in previous years, and shoppers will save about $8 for every $100 they spend, the office reported.

Mailers listing discounted specials at Golden Triangle Mall are on their way to 50,000 residents, and the mall plans to promote store savings through social media this week, said Matt Ludemann, the mall’s manager.

“We’re excited about it,” he said. “It’s always a great weekend to be included in the back-to-school season, and we anticipate strong traffic and strong sales.”

Some shopping centers in the area, like Rayzor Ranch Town Center, have posted deals online that include discounts beyond the tax-free items, such as meal deals at Mooyah Burgers and Cowboy Chicken.

Hours will be extended throughout the weekend at Lewisville’s Vista Ridge Mall, which will be open from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday.

At the JCPenney inside Vista Ridge Mall, there will be door-buster deals Friday from 3 p.m. to close and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., according to a news release. Certain clothing items and backpacks will be on sale during this time, and there will coupons for discounts all weekend.

Local retailers are also amping up with specials to attract customers. At Small Fry Children’s Clothing, owner Nancy Cole is already letting customers put clothes on hold this week before purchasing this weekend. The store will offer special clearances — 30 percent to 50 percent off original prices on spring and summer clothes — and free 60-day layaway.

“It’s always clearance at this time, but then they get to save the tax, so it seems like that’s quite an incentive for quite a few people,” Cole said. “Of course, they’re going first for school supplies, but we always get a nice amount for the tax-free weekend.”

Here is a list of school supplies that are tax-exempt Friday through Sunday in Texas. To qualify as a tax-free purchase, each item must be priced less than $100. For a complete list of qualifying clothing, footwear and other items sold during the tax-free weekend, visit: .
