Coronado Lovern, 24, of Lewisville was charged with intoxication manslaughter in connection with a woman’s death after he drove off an undeveloped section of North Loop 288 near Interstate 35 on Wednesday, Denton police said.

Due to extensive injuries, Jessica Fields, 23, of Lewisville, was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:59 a.m., Officer Ryan Grelle, spokesman for the department, said.

Police said Lovern, the driver, and Fields, the passenger, were traveling west on Loop 288 and approaching I-35 at 2:20 a.m. Wednesday when the accident occurred.

“The driver failed to negotiate the turn and went straight off the undeveloped part of the north loop,” Grelle said.

Troy Taylor, chief medical examiner for the county, said Fields suffered blunt force trauma that resulted in her death.

The maroon 2007 Nissan Altima, owned by Lovern, was driven off an embankment and dropped several feet before bouncing once and landing on a mound of dirt, officials said.

“It was just a hard landing — no rollover involved,” Taylor said.

Lovern told police they had been at a bar in downtown Denton prior to getting on the road, a police affidavit shows.

The affidavit details that the officer observed that Lovern appeared to be intoxicated and had a strong odor of alcohol on his breath.

The officer, records show, did not attempt any field sobriety tests because of Lovern’s emotional state at the time.

Lovern, records show, refused and then resisted a blood draw to check his alcohol level. After a search warrant was obtained, two officers detained him to draw the blood at a local hospital, according to the affidavit.

Lovern was convicted in 2007 of driving while intoxicated in Hickory Creek and in 2011 was convicted of driving while intoxicated in Rowlett, according to police records.

Lovern was being held at the city jail on the charge of intoxication manslaughter, a second-degree felony. His bail was set at $100,000.
