The Denton school board will consider naming a new principal at McNair Elementary School on Tuesday, according to district officials.

In recent weeks, the district has searched for an individual to succeed Sean Flynn, who tendered his resignation because of personal reasons. Superintendent Jamie Wilson said Flynn’s resignation was effective Sept. 13.

Aleta Atkinson, former principal at Pecan Creek Elementary, has served as the acting principal at McNair Elementary since Sept. 16, Wilson said. It’s unknown when a new principal would start work at McNair, he said. The district would have to work with the candidate selected at transitioning from their existing position, he said.

“We continue to look for the strongest leadership candidate to come in and continue the work that our teachers have started and to be engaged with our families in those specific communities,” Wilson said.

On Sept. 16, the McNair principal position was posted and remained posted through Sept. 27, he said.

Information on the number of individuals who applied for the job and interviewed for the position was unavailable at press time.

Flynn was hired as principal at McNair in 2006, and prior to that he served as an assistant principal in Coppell. Attempts to contact Flynn for comment were unsuccessful.

Atkinson, who is serving as acting principal at McNair, retired from the Denton school district in 2009 after 21 years. Atkinson served as acting principal at Newton Rayzor Elementary during the spring semester of the 2011-12 school year.
