A Denton man was arrested Thursday night in connection with the stabbing death of a Ponder man earlier in the day, according to Denton County Sheriff’s Office officials.

Garrett Madison Buelow, 28, was booked into the Denton County Jail Thursday night on a charge of murder. He is currently awaiting arraignment, records show.

Joshua W. Mabrey, 36, of Ponder was found dead Thursday inside a house in the 3100 block of Webb Road when deputies responding to a welfare call arrived about 6:50 a.m., officials said.

Troy Taylor, chief death investigator for Denton County, said Mabrey died at 6:28 a.m. after he was stabbed in the lower abdomen at least once. Sandi Brackeen, spokeswoman for the Denton County Sheriff’s Office, would not confirm the type of weapon used in the stabbing.

Buelow is a resident of the house where Mabrey was found, officials said. According to Denton County records, Buelow has a history including theft and criminal trespassing charges.

In addition to arresting Buelow, deputies also charged Veronica Nunez, 24, another resident of the house, with theft, according to Sheriff’s Office reports. Nunez allegedly took items from Mabrey’s pants pockets, officials said.

Nunez is being held on an Immigration and Customs Enforcement hold at the Denton County Jail. Records show she has a past history including possession of marijuana and failure to identify charges.

Brackeen said the investigation is still underway.
