Honoring service

Veterans Day ceremonies throughout Denton County will honor past and present members of the military, including events today at the Courthouse on the Square.

Today’s downtown Denton event is sponsored by the Denton County Veterans Service Office, the University of North Texas and Texas Woman’s University.

It will include a T-28B Trojan flyover by the Trojan Phlyers air team from Fort Worth, new and vintage military vehicles, honors for veterans and the colors, the TWU Brass Ensemble, the Sam Houston Elementary School choir, a wreath presentation with bagpipes by the Denton Fire Department, a rifle volley and the playing of taps.

The Vietnam Veterans of America, Veterans of Foreign Wars, 957th Quartermaster Company, Disabled Veterans of America, USMC League, American Legion and local Junior ROTC will participate.

Other events today include:

Air Force Junior ROTC salute to Denton County veterans — Starting at 7:20 a.m. at Guyer High School, 7501 Teasley Lane in Denton. Cadets will serve breakfast tacos and coffee in the school cafeteria, with a ceremony at the flagpole at 8:30 a.m. There will be a guest speaker, and Guyer students and AFJROTC cadets will form a line and personally thank all veterans at the ceremony. All local veterans are welcome to attend.

McNair Elementary School reception — Starting at 8 a.m. at 1212 Hickory Creek Road in Denton. Veterans will be invited to speak about where they served, what branch of the military they were in and what their favorite tour of duty was. McNair fifth-graders will read poems about each branch of the military, and the entire class will sing patriotic songs. Veterans are encouraged to stay for doughnuts and juice.

Denton High School Student Council tribute — Starting at 8:15 a.m. at 1007 Fulton St. A free continental breakfast will be served in Room 106 by the Student Council, and a flag ceremony by the Air Force Junior ROTC will follow in front of the school at 8:15 a.m. A procession will lead back to the auditorium for music by the DHS Lab Band One jazz ensemble at 9:45 a.m. The DHS National Honor Society will host a Veterans Day program at 10 a.m. with performances by the Junior ROTC, choir, orchestra, band and theater students. Keynote speaker will be Bob Sikes, a retired U.S. Marine Corps major. All Denton County veterans, active military personnel and other members of the community are invited to attend.

Sam Houston Elementary School assembly — Starting at 8:15 a.m. in the school cafeteria, 3100 Teasley Lane in Denton. Local veterans will be honored.

Ryan High School salute — Starting at 8:30 a.m. at 5101 E. McKinney St. in Denton. Students will gather at the school’s flagpole to greet veterans while the Air Force Junior ROTC presents the colors. Trumpeters will perform the national anthem, taps and other patriotic songs. Veterans will be able to share memories and stories with students following the presentation.

McMath Middle School program — Starting at 9 a.m. in the school cafeteria, 1900 Jason Drive in Denton. Students from sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade social studies classes will deliver presentations, and the McMath cheerleaders and Junior ROTC will show appreciation to Denton County veterans. The McMath band will perform. Local veterans, family members and supporters of McMath students are invited to attend.

Special memorial service — Starting at 10 a.m., a 30-minute ceremony at Spc. Ernest W. Dallas Jr. Veterans Memorial Park, 6100 Sun Ray Drive in Denton, will include the laying of stones for Vietnam vets and one for war dogs.
