Chamber of commerce’s economic development leader takes new job

Denton Chamber of Commerce Vice President Karen Dickson — who helped bring 1,510 jobs and more than $260 million in capital investments to the area — has resigned to accept a job in San Antonio.

Dickson, who served as the chamber’s vice president of economic development, said she has accepted a job n economic development but did not release details. Her last day is Wednesday.

“It’s been a very positive experience,” she said of her eight-year tenure with the Denton chamber. “I’ve enjoyed living and working in Denton. I’ve made great friends, had great colleagues, and it’s been a wonderful time.”

Among the projects that came to Denton on Dickson’s watch were the Target distribution center, the Aldi  grocery store as well as expansions at United Copper Industries and Jostens.

“There were lots of good expansions and some relocations that happened while I was here,” she said.“It’s been fun. I love this field. I love working in economic development, and I love working with businesses to help them achieve their business goals.”

Dickson helped recruit the new businesses by promoting the city in all of her travels, said Aimee Bissett, director of economic development for the city.

“She’s been instrumental in recruiting new businesses to Denton during her time with the chamber,” Bissett said of Dickson.

“She spends a lot of her time going out into other communities, looking at businesses that are looking at other locations, and promoting Denton as a good place for businesses.”

When she joined the office in2005, she recalled the department had just started the “North of Ordinary”campaign to promote the city, and she helped create the visuals of the campaign.

She noted that for the past six years, the Texas Economic Development Council has awarded the city for economic excellence. The city has also won International Economic Development Council awards during her time in the position.

Bissett said no plans have been made for what the chamber will do after Dickson leaves, as they have not had an opportunity to discuss a schedule for refilling the position.
