Officials concerned not enough locals have picked up equipment
Charter cable customers in Denton, Lake Dallas and Corinth must pick up a free digital cable box by Tuesday or they won’t be able to watch television.
Charter is making the switch to an all-digital network, meaning that customers won’t be able to view any channels through the traditional wall-to-television wiring, said Brian Anderson, director of regional communications.
The free digital cable boxes are available at two locations in Denton.
Despite e-mails, reminders on bills, and automated and direct calls to customers in the area, traffic at the two offices has been steady but not as heavy as anticipated based on the number of customers who need to get digital boxes, Anderson said.
“Our fear, and what we’re really trying to avoid, is folks waking up on Tuesday morning and turning on the television and not having the programming they’re used to seeing,” he said.
Fort Worth networks have made the switch already, and the change there was well received, he said. The upcoming change will also affect Rockwall, officials said.
Charter is removing the remaining analog signals and putting in the digital signals, Anderson said. The change will give Charter customers access to 90 new high-definition channels, including Nickelodeon, Hallmark Channel and BET. It will also give them access to video on demand, regardless of their cable package, and will improve Internet capabilities, he said.
“We are completely eliminating all analog signals,” Anderson said. “We can fit several digital channels in the space of one analog channel.”
Kevin Allen, vice president and general manager for Charter, said many customers have already made the move to digital.
“More than 90 percent of Charter customers have adopted digital devices for at least one television in their home,” Allen said in a statement.
