Salvation Army’s kettle campaign takes big hit

The Salvation Army’s Red Kettle campaign is falling far short on donations, with the strong winter storm and a short holiday season putting a crimp in contributions.

The Denton County area is about $20,000 behind last year’s contributions, and the entire North Texas region has fallen short by nearly $600,000, according to Bill Cheek Jr., chairman of the Salvation Army’s Denton Area Advisory Council.

The local campaign still needs volunteers to help at the iconic red kettles as well as contributions of money, food, clothing and supplies.

“This is the worst I’ve seen,” Cheek said.

The kettles will be set up until Christmas outside 17 locations in the Denton area, including key shopping areas, large department stores at Golden Triangle Mall, Sam’s Club and Walgreens and Walmart stores, Cheek said.

The winter storm caused not only a drop in donations but also increased costs, Cheek said. The local shelter was open around the clock during the worst of the icy weather and has been full.

“We’ve been at capacity every day since the storm hit,” Cheek said. “We really need your help. We’re going to be desperate here pretty soon.”

Contributions to the red kettles are a key source of income for the Salvation Army, which offers emergency overnight lodging for the homeless.

In addition to cash contributions, the Salvation Army of Denton also accepts food, clothing and grooming supplies at its shelter at 1508 E. McKinney St.

“We ask that you please consider the men, women and children that are struggling to stay warm during this cold and icy holiday season,” Cheek said in an e-mail to the Denton Record-Chronicle.
