Longtime Denton resident Jean Schaake took a big step toward her anticipated campaign for mayor this spring, naming Joe Roy campaign treasurer this week and issuing a formal announcement that she intends to run.

The period to file an application for a place on the May 10 ballot doesn’t begin until Jan. 29. But, Schaake said she’s looking forward to the race and has already been talking with, and listening to, people she hopes will support her bid.

Residents continue to be concerned about growth and the city’s infrastructure, she said.

“We need to make sure we keep Denton attractive to businesses and industry, and as a place to live,” Schaake said.

Roy said he was happy to support Schaake, calling her years of community service proven leadership.

A longtime resident and member of the University of North Texas faculty, Schaake served on the Denton school board from 1992 to 2007, with seven of those years as president. Currently she serves as chairwoman of the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission. She has also served as president of the Greater Denton Arts Council and on the board of North Texas Public Broadcasting.

Although recent mayoral races have been expensive and Roy expects this spring’s race to be close, Roy also said he didn’t expect the race to be costly, since it didn’t involve an incumbent.

Outgoing Mayor Mark Burroughs cannot run again, having served the maximum amount on City Council permitted under the charter. He served three consecutive terms as mayor and previously on the council.

Chris Watts, a former three-term council member, announced in September that he intends to run for mayor after he appointed Bette Sherman as his campaign treasurer.

“I’m not expecting it to get out of hand,” Roy said. “I’m expecting a cordial race centered on the issues and the individuals’ qualifications.”
