United Way cites increase in donations, number of donors

The final numbers are in — the United Way of Denton County raised almost $2.25 million in 2013 with help from more than 9,800 donors.

Earlier numbers reported at the United Tribute event in January were not quite final, as some donations that got to Denton County through other area United Way organizations were still being processed, said Gary Henderson, president and CEO of United Way of Denton County.

These numbers show an 8.7 percent increase in donations over last year, and an increase of 1,011 donors, Henderson said.

“This year, new campaigns really started off well, and that’s the largest portion of the increase in donors,” he said. “We love that because we’re retaining our existing donors, which means they deeply believe in the work we’re doing, but that we’re also expanding our reach and bringing in new donors.”

The new campaigns in 2013 were major, he said. The city of Lewisville, town of Little Elm, Target distribution center and Labinal/SAFRAN Group were the largest new campaigns and brought in more money than expected.

Some old partnerships also showed significant growth this year, such as the Denton school district. Officials in the district worked to make sure every school knew about the campaign, and it helped increase donations, Henderson said.

“They just worked so diligently to make sure every school was communicated with, and for a campaign that has been in place for so long as Denton ISD and United Way, to grow by 40 percent in one year — you don’t even hope for something like that,” he said. “It’s beyond belief in many other ways.”

With 2013 wrapped up, two campaigns for 2014 are already underway in the Lewisville and Northwest school districts.

United Way employees and volunteers are also working to create the allocation patterns, which show where the money will be donated. A committee will recommend the plans to the board of directors for approval in March.
